Auxiliary lens for 3D cinema projection system

3D projection display is increasingly extensively used thanks to its vivid and three-dimensional display effects. To achieve the 3D effect, the projectors commonly used in theaters require dedicated 3D devices; the commonly used 3D devices incorporate polarizers that convert image light with natural light properties into linearly polarized light; then, the linearly modulated liquid crystal devices convert linearly polarized light into sequential left-handed circularly polarized light and right-handed circularly polarized light, which are left-eye image light and right-eye image light respectively; their overlap offers a 3D effect. In that process, half of the natural light is lost through the polarizer, and then another part is lost through the liquid crystal device, which results in a low overall light efficiency of the projector. To reduce the light loss of 3D device at the position of the polarizer, technical engineers developed a 3D system with dual optical paths so that the image light with natural light properties is divided into S light and P light through the PBS prism; S light is for transmission, while P light is for reflection; the reflected P is converted into S light through the polarization converter; the two beams of S light pass through the liquid crystal device and turn into time-sequential left-handed circularly polarized light and right-handed circularly polarized light, which are finally synthesized on the screen into left-eye image light and right-eye image light.
